Autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton Essay Sample free essay sample
In the autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton three key thoughts I found interesting were resiliency. hope and bravery. Soul Surfer is an animating true narrative about a 13 twelvemonth old miss acquiring her arm bitten off by a shark. Bethany. from the age of two had a passion for surfing. when this event occurred the possibility of being able to trail her dream of being a professional surfboarder became ââ¬Å"blurredâ⬠. The cardinal thoughts of resiliency. hope and bravery are portrayed throughout this text most significantly after this accident had occurred. An thought in the text that I find interesting is resiliency. Resilience is the ability to resile back from disputing state of affairss. Bethany Hamilton losing her arm caused this quality to be tested. Bethany demonstrates resiliency particularly when she had entered her first surfboarding competition after the onslaught. With the loss of one arm. this undertaking was ever traveling to be disputing. We will write a custom essay sample on Autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton Essay Sample or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While Bethany is in ââ¬Å"the impact zoneâ⬠she gets knocked down from the force of the moving ridges. Like in existent life. the determination to ââ¬Å"get back upâ⬠is a presentation of resiliency. To surfers the ââ¬Å"impact zoneâ⬠is when the surfboarder receives the worst whipping afterâ⬠pass overing outâ⬠or ââ¬Å"paddling outâ⬠. This is where the moving ridges break most systematically and fiercely. In life. the ââ¬Å"impact zoneâ⬠is where you are forced to resile back after traveling through a unsmooth period in life or a hard state of affairs. Bethany inspires resiliency in others when she visits a 7 twelvemonth old male child in 2009. This male child lost his arm in a auto accident and believed he could neer play baseball once more. Bethany actuating this male child to non give up shows us her presentation of resiliency is an illustration to follow by others. I find this thought interesting because it is really relevant to every twenty-four hours life. Resilience is a quality required in many state of affairss. Possessing it is a gift because it triggers your hibernating abilities such as concealed strengths. beliefs and assurance. We all have learnt one manner or another that ââ¬Å"life doesnââ¬â¢t acquire easier or more forgiving. we merely acquire stronger and more resilient. â⬠This text encourages this quality to be practiced through all tough state of af fairss. Another thought that I find interesting in the autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton is bravery. Courage is get the better ofing fright and making what scares you. Often we neer know when we are being brave. this text shows Bethanyââ¬â¢s journey to going brave. Courage is shown most significantly in the text when Bethany chose to go to Thailand to help in the clean up procedure of the Tsunami. Bethany. when she arrived. stood on the border of the beach watching the sea inquiring why ââ¬Å"everyone was so panicky of the H2O. â⬠She watched a group of kids sitting on the sand without anyone to look after them. Bethany realises all of those kids are orphans as a consequence of the Tsunami. Sarah. the counsel council member of the trip to Thailand. walks over to Bethany while she is experiencing disquieted that these kids have no household. Sarah inspires Bethany to have a different ââ¬Å"perspectiveâ⬠and to gain ââ¬Å"compassion can drive us to have alternate pe rspectivesâ⬠. From this advice. Bethany starts to experience blessed that she has survived and still has household. Bethany so inspires all the kids to travel and hold a swim to confront their frights. Other citizens in Thailand watched and clapped to back up Bethany giving these kids the bravery to confront their frights. I found this thought interesting because it takes a batch of bravery to set your ain state of affairs on clasp to gain others are in worse state of affairss than yourself. Bethany making this proved to me that she was ââ¬Å"showing bravery by making something out of the ordinary to better her life. â⬠This thought is relevant to society because unless people have courage to confront their frights and to acquire back up after neglecting. we wouldnââ¬â¢t have the resources we are supplied with today. 12. 000 people were saved in Thailand because of the voluntaries. such as Bethany. who helped feed hungering people and rebuild places. These voluntaries showed bravery that had driven back their frights. and it has allowed them to truly unrecorded life the manner it is meant to be lived. Soul Surfer is a text that motivates people of all ages to seek new thin gs even if it scares them ; it shows us that bravery can take to get the better ofing hard state of affairss which everyone brushs at some point in their lives. Another thought I found interesting in the text Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton is hope. Hope is cognizing and strongly believing that though one is in a hard state of affairs. things will better. This is exemplified in the text when Bethany competes in the Hawaiian Island subjects. Her presence entirely gives hope and motive to others to win. Bethany. in the last minute of the competition scores a ââ¬Å"9. 7â⬠on a moving ridge which required her to merely necessitate another ââ¬Å"9â⬠to win the national event. Although the Siren goes off to stop the competition after Bethany has surfed a brilliant moving ridge she ââ¬Å"won in everybody elseââ¬â¢s eyes. â⬠Her protagonists realise ââ¬Å"if you lose hope. somehow you lose the verve that keeps life traveling. You lose courage to be that quality that helps you keep forcing on in malice of everything. â⬠I found this thought interesting because like resiliency and bravery hope is needed to non give up on yourself. This universe would be a much different topographic point if everyone thought the ends they had set in life were excessively hard. they wouldnââ¬â¢t believe in themselves to accomplish them. It is a relevant thought to life as ââ¬Å"hope will ever be the route map to life. It will be 1s guide to the way of success and felicity. â⬠Hope is required in many state of affairss. Hope was required in Bethanyââ¬â¢s state of affairs and it allowed her to believe she could surf once more. Without this hope. Bethany would neer hold been able to ââ¬Å"embrace more people than she would hold with two weaponries. â⬠In decision the autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton has many thoughts that I find interesting. These thoughts are resiliency. bravery and hope. Soul Surfer is an animating true narrative of a miss crushing the odds and neer giving up. I have learnt that through resiliency we can hold bravery to neer give up on our ends. Hope is required along the journey to believe you will accomplish these ends. We need to gain that ââ¬Å"being knocked downâ⬠is portion of life and if ââ¬Å"we can demo people we are strong plenty to acquire back upâ⬠success and felicity will follow.

Marcel Duchamp essays
Marcel Duchamp essays Painter. Born July 28, 1887 in Blainville, France, the son of a notary of Rouen. One of Marcel's brothers, Gaston, known as Jacques Villon, was a painter; another brother, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, was a sculptor. Duchamp moved to Paris at the age of 17 and began to paint. By 1911 he was responding in his painting to cubism, but his subjects were unusually personal and psychologically complex compared to the typical cubist ones. In his famous Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912) Duchamp used a limited cubist palette and faceting of forms but completely contradicted the cubist esthetic in his choice of an ironic title and stress on actual movement. When this painting was exhibited at the Armory Show in New York City in 1913, it created an uproar and was the focal point for derogatory criticism of the show (one critic described the work as "an explosion in a shingle factory"). In 1912-1913 a radical change took place in both Duchamp's life and art. Together with the writer Guillaume Apollinaire and the painter Francis Picabia, he began working out a highly original and mocking concept of art. Duchamp sought out methods of making art in which the artist's hand would not be stressed (using chance and mechanical methods of drawing and painting). Increasingly language and the nonvisual side of art became important to him. As he later said: "I am interested in ideasnot merely the visual products. I want to put painting once again to the service of the mind." In 1913 Duchamp created his first "ready-made," the Bicycle Wheel. This was the first of a limited number of everyday objects that Duchamp chose (sometimes making minor additions), rather than made by hand. In these he questioned conventional ideas about the artist's role in the creation of art and about original and unique artistic products, and he brought up issues as to the value of art, the market, and the art gallery. In the next few years he turned out a small number...

The decisions made by the Bush administration, for the first time in Essay
The decisions made by the Bush administration, for the first time in American history, approving extraordinary procedures of investigation, questioning, and punishment to use in the War on Terror - Essay Example A UN panel formed on November 2004, defined terrorism as any act aimed to cause bodily harm to civilians for compelling the government to do any act (Allen). Even though America declared war against terror after the September 11 attacks, it conducted anti terrorist operations since the early 1990ââ¬â¢s. From this period the US Government was operating anti terror programmes. One such programme was forcible capturing or seizing suspected terrorists from foreign countries and transferring them to a 3rd country. This programme came to be known as Extraordinary rendition. It was expanded by the Bush administration after the 2001 attacks. Latest records reveal that up to 1245 flights have been operated for transporting terror suspects from undisclosed locations to detention centers operated by CIA also called as Black sites. This action by the US government has created tensions between its European allies, namely the Council of Europe, Congressional committees and Human rights organizations. They have questioned the legality of the programme even though forgetting the ill effects of terror attacks suffered by US and many other foreign countries. This programme of Extraordinary rendition was formed after the 1993 attacks on US. It was a way for the CIA for keeping the terror suspects out from the American court system because they feared that the intelligence system could be jeopardized. This programme got approval from the Presidential Decision Directive 39 issued by President Bill Clinton. This directive gave suggestions regarding procedures to be used for forcible abduction of terrorists without the permission of the host governments. Actually this act was a blatant encroachment against the sovereignty of other nations on the grounds of fight against terror. This programme was extensively used after the September 11 attacks by the US government. The programme of Extraordinary rendition was promoted first by Richard

However, the contour of things used to be different even a century or two ago: Adam Gopnik states that the key to the changes in our overall lifestyle and social behavior lies in invention of telegrams and trains (Gopnik). Yearning to reduce distances and draw closer together, people have invented technologies that have taken roots in the worldââ¬â¢s developed communities so firmly that they might have a devastating effect. Motivation and the Brain - Eating Healthy Essay Example for Free
Motivation and the Brain Eating Healthy Essay Eating right is essential for positive motivation and clear thinking. The brain, specifically the hypothalamus, along with the cerebral hemisphere works closely with physiological stimulation. This includes all five of our senses, specifically speaking, taste. Explaining the brain function associated with eating, I will discuss the influence of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, which will include heredity and involving the environment. In addition I will discuss the motivation need to succeed in eating healthy. The main function of the hypothalamus is homeostasis, or maintaining the bodys state in which it works. Factors such as blood pressure, body temperature, fluid and electrolyte balance, and body weight are held to a precise value called the set-point. The Hypothalamus organizes and controls many complex emotions, feelings and moods, as well as all motivational states including hunger, appetite and food intake, and everything to do with the concept of pleasure including satisfaction, comfort and creative activities (Incredible Horizons, 2009). It appears that almost everything the Hypothalamus does is related in some way to weight management and controlled weight loss. When the Hypothalamus is not working properly, food becomes more important, but increasingly more unfulfilling. We end up never feeling satisfied with the foods which we have eaten, gradually eating more and more to try to compensate for whatever is lacking. From a metabolism point of view, the Hypothalamus not only governs the motivation to eat, but most importantly how eating is to be experienced, if it is satisfying or not, and how deep the satisfaction occurs. This gives an idea just how important a healthy hypothalamic function really is (Incredible Horizons, 2009). Understanding how the hypothalamus works and keeping it healthy could be an extrinsic motivational factor to eat healthy. Being educated on how food affects the brain but also the body as a whole would be an example of extrinsic motivation. However, it is how we learn to eat, hereditarily speaking that gives us the tools to start out eating healthy from a young age or not. Lifelong food preference tends to start to develop while a baby is still in the motherââ¬â¢s womb. The strongest pattern for future food preferences is formed during the age of 9 to 19 months of age (Vera, 2009). At this time, everything connected with food intake leaves a strong imprint on the childââ¬â¢s brain. Also, the baby is tasting everything with his or her mouth; toys, shoes, body parts, etc. Concurrently, the child is memorizing the experiences of his mother and fathers eating habits; what they are eating, what they are feeding the baby, their emotional reaction to the babyââ¬â¢s consumption of these foods all while the unsuspecting parents believe that the child does not comprehend much of what is going on. The reality is the child is forming food habits for a lifetime. Whatever the first tastes, textures, smells an sights of food are, that child will crave them for the rest of his or her life, especially in moments of distress. Because of this, it would appear that comfort food is not too far from the truth. This was often a time in a childââ¬â¢s life when their mom or dad focused much love and caring on them and purely through association finds its way into our adult lives when we feel emotionally distressed or needing comfort. Human behavior patterns forming in childhood are crucially important for parents to pay close attention to the eating habits they are helping their children form (Vera, 2009). Promoting healthy eating habits with special care introducing fresh fruits and vegetables to their children as much as possible; in addition, parents must keep this promotion up otherwise children will fall prey to the societyââ¬â¢s image of food which is unhealthy; another extrinsic example. In todayââ¬â¢s society negative eating habits are advertised in every corner. According to Not Alone website, the top ten lists of popular food most people eat on a regular basis may not appear too alarming: a burger meal, Pizza, Spaghetti, or even a hot dog meal. However, after reviewing the nutritional analysis it should be alarming! For example, a burger meal contains 1300 calories, 34 grams of protein, 189 grams of carbohydrates and 44 grams of fat. This is equivalent to 38 teaspoons of sugar and a half of a stick of butter (McKeith, Ph. D. , 2005). The normal daily calorie intake should be 2,550 for men and 1,940 for women (McKeith, Ph. D. , 2005). Unfortunately the typically daily intake for both men and women are on average 3, 877 calories. Knowing these statistics should lead a person to use internal motivation to recognize the severity of the issue and begin to eat healthy. To conclude, eating right is essential for positive motivation and clear thinking. We have learned the hypothalamus, along with the cerebral hemisphere works closely with physiological stimulation including taste. Iââ¬â¢ve explained the brain function associated with eating, discussed the influence of extrinsic and intrinsic factors including heredity and the environment. Lastly, I discussed the motivation need to succeed in eating healthy. References Breck, K. B. (2011). A practical guide to a happy life. Why I Have Chosen the Teaching Profession Essay -- essays papers
Why I Have Chosen the Teaching Profession When I think of becoming a teacher I would like to imagine or hope that I would be ââ¬Å"turning the keyâ⬠for a student of mine to become something great. I have been soul searching for many years now to have a better understanding of what I am suppose to do in my life. I have worked in so many jobs in so many areas but nothing was fulfilling my life with any amount of meaning. I found myself not wanting to go back the next day or wishing I were somewhere else. Well I guess everyone does that is what I would tell myself. Until a couple years ago when I was working and living in Las Vegas. It was there that I finally realized what I had been searching for in my life. I was spending a lot of time with a co-worker who had children in the school system. I vividly remember hearing her children say ââ¬Å"the teacherââ¬â¢s donââ¬â¢t care.â⬠This was shocking for a child who was in the fourth grade to be saying to me. I guess because I had a great experience in school with wonderful caring teachers. My memories of school are a little blurred with age but I do remember looking up to them as role models. Especially, my eighth grade English teacher who was the first person who ever told me that I was a beautiful writer. She encouraged me to continue to learn as much as I could about becoming a good writer. I still see her from time to time and she asks if I am still writing. I always say yes, but the last time I saw her, I got the chance to te...

Essay on Mobile Revolution Essay
Mobiles are no more a luxury or a life style product. Mobile phones, which were one of the beautiful possessions of anybody not until a decade ago, have now become a necessity to the common man. The entry of private service providers with CTMA, GSM and of course, 3G technologies has changed the Communication sector in India beyond imagination. Many new competitors have entered the mobile market resulting in reduction of the STD rates and Local call rates. Plans are also on anvil to enable mobile users to switch over to other service providers without changing their number, also called Mobile Number Portability (MNP). The mobile users in India have increased tremendously during the last decade. Youth, both in rural and urban India, have welcomed and accepted mobiles with open hands. The decrease in call rates can be imagined from the fact that it cost around? 16 per minute when mobiles were introduced in India and today it costs as little as 1 paisa per 2 seconds offered by companies like MTS. Even the size of mobile phones has changed to an unimaginable level. They have become very handy today compared to their walkie-talkie resemblance when they were introduced. The immense benefit offered by a mobile has triggered this revolution. With a mobile phone in hand, one can be available round the clock, and can get the up-to-date information on anything. The availability of internet on mobile phones has increased its utility tremendously. It has made mobile phones, to an extent, an essential item for carrying out a business transaction. The facility of sending short messages or pictures enables a person to send the message across without actually bothering to disturb the other person. For traders, it helps them get the price details of any products without even bringing the products to the market. The introduction of mobile banking helps people carry their bank in their mobile. Some people even carry their office in their mobile phones. However, mobile phones also have some demerits as they can be used to detonate bombs. Some instruments which have cameras in them can be used for taking unnecessary photographs. Constant use of mobile phones may create health problems and increase risk of accidents on road. In spite of these demerits, mobile phones are becoming popular day-by-day as their advantages fairly outweigh the demerits. In fact, the mobile revolution has occurred very fast in India. This symbolizes the countryââ¬â¢s transformation from an inward looking tentative nature to a confident and resurgent global economic power. The mobile phone service providers have also increased manifold during the years. Some of the important market players are: Aircel, Airtel, BSNL, MTNL, Idea Cellular, Tata Indicom, Tata DoCoMo, Reliance Communications, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, Videocon Telecommunications, MTS India and Spice Telecom. Even in rural India, mobile phone has brought a tremendous change to rural telephony, marginalizing the middlemen and empowering women, strengthened by the formation of self-help groups. It has vastly improved access to information and helped in the explosive growth in connectivity. Even at sea, fishermen in Kerala use the mobiles to keep track of rates for their catch in the market. The improvement in infrastructure and support from the Government has acted as a catalyst for mobiles to make tremendous inroads into rural India. The role of mobile telephones are varied, in that, they help assess the market information, coordinate travel and transport, manage remote activities and increase the remunerative working days. As a result, the rural marketing scenario has also undergone a change. Today, the rural consumer is better informed and price conscious. The total mobile penetration is increasing at a quick pace with companies like Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Tata Teleservices, etc. aving unveiled big network expansion plans and innovative marketing strategies specially tailored region-wise. Some of these companies are using a door-to-door marketing strategy in villages and B and C category census towns. They are involving members of gram panchayats and trained market-feelers to make residents aware of the usefulness of mobile telephony and how the system of pre-paid refills work. Handset manufacturers too are gearing up with Nokia incorporating nine Indian languages on certain handsets to promote sales. Value-for- money handsets priced between 1,000 and 1,400 with a plethora of tariff plans to choose from is also one of the reasons for driving subscription growth in these regions. Handsets are being imported in bulk by some service providers. It is expected that voice short messaging service will become a focus area in future, especially in rural areas and service providers are already planning implementation of the same. The pace at which mobile revolution has occurred in India can be attributed to the easy to understand operations. For an illiterate, mobiles phones were so easy to operate that they needed to understand only two buttons the green button for answering a call and the red button for disconnecting a call. Everything else can be learnt with usage and passage of time. Even today, most of the mobiles are used on this two button principle, which makes it a popular device. Gone are the days when people use to queue up before a Public Call Office (PCO) and wait their turn for an hour, only to end up without connectivity. Mobile phones have also removed the necessity to remember telephone numbers of other people. In-built phone books in the instruments enable a person to call the other person, without ever having to remember the other personââ¬â¢s number. Actually, mobile phones have become an all-in-one tool in the pocket, which has replaced even the old pocket diary. It is also slowly replacing purse, with the introduction of mobile transactions. No wonder, life without mobile phones have become unimaginable and unthinkable to many.
